First Meet:
1989 ADFPA Washington State Championships
Most Memorable Moment:
I have a couple: Winning my 1st competition,
the 1989 ADFPA Washington St 242 lb class
while weighing 229 lbs. I was attending Central
Washington University at the time and entered
the meet because many of my fellow football
players "assumed" I was using performance
enhancing drugs as I held virtually every team
(football) lifting record......and I was a
fullback/running back. I saw the entry
form/flyer on our gym wall and decided to enter.
My training partners and I trained 8 weeks for
it and we were all basically clueless. We all
shared my knee wraps at the meet; 3 guys, 1 set
of wraps. At my 1st meet I was a "no one"....and
Willie Austin and Martin Beavers, both National
champions, treated me with great dignity and
respect. I will always remember that. I squatted
650.....not having a clue how to even wrap my
knees properly. And yes....I was drug
tested...and passed. In my second competition,
the 1990 Northwest regionals I met a guy by the
name of Tommy Brice. We ended up becoming great
friends and have been so for several years.
Tommy went on to become the 1993 ADFPA National
Champion at Super Heavyweight. Unfortunately,
Tommy tore his bicep tendon on his last "token"
deadlift and was not able to lift at the World
Championships in Canada. John Binkowsi,
who placed 2nd to Tommy at Nationals went on to
become world champion that year. Tommy had
surgery, then proceeded to gain a lot of weight,
getting up to 347 lbs...at 5'9". One morning,
his oldest son Nick (who was 10 at the
time) asked him, daddy...are you going to be
around when I get older? Right then, Tommy
decided to lose weight and get into great
lifting shape. For 2 years Tommy dieted, lifted,
ate 8-10 meals a day (even getting up in the
middle of the night), did a ton of cardio, even
riding a bicycle to work for a year. In 1995, we
both decided to enter an ADFPA meet being held
in Las Vegas. I competed and won the 242
lb class and Tommy competed in and won the 220's
!!!! He weighed in at 219 lbs with his body fat
at roughly 5%. We know this as his he was
hydrostatically weighed (dunked) in a water
tank. He never used ANY form of drugs to lose
the weight. My all time most memorable moment in
powerlifting was watching my friend Tommy Brice
lift at an elite level while weighing 128 lbs
less than he did 2 years prior. Coincidentally,
John Binkowski, the guy Tommy had beaten at the
93' Nationals was at the meet coaching. John had
trouble believing it was Tommy and was
completely astounded. In 27 years of lifting,
many with elite powerlifters/bodybuilders and
athletes , I have never seen such an incredible
accomplishment.
Additional info:
1989, 1991, 1994, 2000 ADFPA/USAPL
Washington St champion @ 242 (1994 - 1st in
275's weighing 243) I believe I am the only
person to win this title 4 times in 3 different
decades. 1991,1993,1994 Northwest Regional
Champion. 1994 ADFPA National Championships -
6th @ 242 (w/ opening lifts) 2002 USAPL Oregon
St Champion @ 242 and best overall lifter (lb
for lb). I am very proud to state that
every meet I ever competed in was drug tested
(20+) I never failed a drug test, never failed
to complete a competition (bomb out) and I was
never injured in competition. My best memories
were the people I met and the bonds that we
formed.
